University District

Food Waste Drop-off Site

Summary

Through a grant-funded collaboration between The Ohio State University’s Department of Design, the University District Organization, SWACO, and OSU Zero Waste, this project established the first neighborhood food-waste drop-off site in the University District—Columbus’s densest residential area. The initiative was managed by UDO and supported by OSU Design students, who helped design and launch the site.

Outcomes

Opened in 2025, the drop-off site provides residents with a convenient way to divert food waste from the landfill, contributing to citywide sustainability goals. The project serves as a model for future neighborhood sites and demonstrates how design, research, and community partnerships can lead to lasting environmental impact.

Connections (Partners & Grants)

The project was a collaboration between UDO, OSU Design, SWACO, and OSU Zero Waste. Launch design was completed by OSU Design students through a sustainability studio led by Professor Maria Palazzi, with UDO providing project management. SWACO continues to fund and oversee the ongoing operations of the drop-off site.
